Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an ancient medical system that takes a deep understanding of the laws and patterns of nature and applies them to the human body. TCM is a complete medical system that has been practiced to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses for more than 5,000 years. TCM is based on a belief in yin and yang -defined as opposing energies, such as earth and heaven, winter and summer, and happiness and sadness. When yin and yang are in balance, you feel relaxed and energized. Out of balance, however, yin and yang negatively affect your health.

At the heart of TCM is the tenet that the root cause of illnesses, not their symptoms, must be treated. In modern-day terms, TCM is holistic in its approach; it views every aspect of a person body, mind, spirit, and emotional part of one complete circle rather than loosely connected pieces to be treated individually.

The following is a brief introduction to some of the key terms and concepts in traditional Chinese medicine.

TCM Treatment Modalities

  • Chinese Psychology: the understanding of emotions and their relationship to the internal organ systems and their influence on health.
  • Herbal Medicine: the use of herbal combinations or formulas to strengthen and support organ system function.
  • Acupressure: the use of specific hand techniques to help qi flow smoothly.
  • Qigong: an energy practice, generally encompassing simple movements and postures. Some Qigong systems also emphasize breathing techniques.
  • Chinese Massage Therapy (Tui Na): it includes five parts. 1. Press and rub (Amno): used for rejuvenation and health maintenance 2. Push and grasp-(Tuina): used for treating injuries, joint and muscle problems and internal disorders 3. Infant Tuina : used for babies and young children 4. Point press-(Dian Xue) : use of methods similar to Acupressure 5. Curing with external qi (energy)-(Wai Qi Liao Fa): healing with direct transmission by qigong masters who have undergone several years of rigorous training and discipline
  • Foods for Healing: the prescription of certain foods for healing based on their energy essences or energy signatures, not nutritional value.

Our Herbal Treatment

Herbal medicine is a major component of Chinese medicine as it is part of the methods of treatment. Currently, around 600 various herbs are commonly used to treat ailments. The herbs are classified in two major categories: their temperature and taste.

The temperature of the herbs is based on the extent of the yin and yang, which is a concept that refers to opposing forces creating a whole. Cool herbs are under the yin while hot herbs are the yang. The distinction is based on how the herbs feel. For example, peppermint is considered as a cool herb because they feel cold. The five tastes in herbs are sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and pungent.

The combinations made by both taste and temperature provide the herb the healing properties. It is important to know that herbs are not stuck to just a single quality. The various properties may affect one organ system or more.

Heat disorders can be remedied by warm herbs. However, it should still be blended with cool herbs to create an overall balance. Neutral herbs, or gentle herbs, are those that are neither hot nor cold.

When it comes to tastes, sour herbs are often used in perspiration such as for protracted cough or chronic diarrhea. Bitter herbs clear heat, purge the bowels, lower the qi or energy, improve appetite, and dries damp. They can be used in treating people with arthritis or leucorrhoea. For sweet herbs, there is a purpose of toning and harmonizing the many of the important systems of the body. They can also inhibit pain.  Spicy herbs circulate the qi and vitalize the blood. They basically have the effect of enhancing the body’s metabolism. Finally, salty herbs clean out the bowels and soften masses that form in the body.

What makes Chinese herbal treatments unique is the way that the ingredients are formulated. In other herbal practices, the herbs are usually given singly or makes use of small combinations of herbs with the same function. Chinese herbalists rarely use a single herb to treat an illness. Each formula used usually contains at least four herbs. In some instances, the preparation made by the practitioner can make use of up to 20 herbs.

Decoction is a term used to refer to the traditional technique of preparing herbal medicine. It comes in the form of concentrated tea. The practitioner measures out the daily dosage of every herb and blends them together in a container or bag. The patient can then boil the herbs in water. What was decocted can then be consumed more than once in a day.

Our Specialized Subjects

Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in your rectum or anus. The type of hemorrhoid you have depends on where it occurs. Basic have three types:

    Internal hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids originate in the inner part of the lower rectum. This type of hemorrhoids lacks nerve cells. This is why internal hemorrhoids are painless. Internal hemorrhoids are painless with light red rectal bleeding with stools, itching, burning, mucus discharge or excessive moisture, visible bulge (prolapsed) mass, thrombosis (obstruction due to blood clot).

    Prolapsed hemorrhoids

Prolapsed hemorrhoids are medically termed as internal hemorrhoids disorder, in which mass tissues tend to protrude or distend outward from the anal opening. There are many grades in prolapsed hemorrhoids condition such as second, third and fourth degree prolapsed hemorrhoids.

    External hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids develop below the rectal opening or surrounding the anus. They are situated under the skin, and the presence of nerve cells make these hemorrhoids very painful. External hemorrhoids usually present with mild discomfort, pain after bowel movement or itching. Bleeding may occur if a hemorrhoidal vein breaks because of a sudden increase in pressure or scraping. Other complaints are incomplete defecation (a sensation that you have not emptied completely after a bowel movement), weakness or fatigue with anemia. In general, all signs and symptoms worsen with diarrhea or constipation.

Fistula

It is an abnormal medical condition which results in the growth of unnecessary passage ways between different organs which need not have been there in the first place. Fistulas can develop almost anywhere inside the body and between any two organs. Although in most cases it is not much of a complication. However precautions and treatment not taken at the right time might lead to problems like infection and even cancer at times.

Anal Fissure

It’s a medical condition in which there is a small cut or incision on the skin lining the anus. Its quite a painful condition and is supplemented by bleeding at regular intervals of time.

Anal Abscess

An anal abscess is a painful condition in which a collection of pus develops near the anus. Most anal abscesses are a result of infection from small anal glands. The most common type of abscess is a perianal abscess. This often appears as a painful boil-like swelling near the anus. It may be red in colour and warm to the touch. Anal abscesses located in deeper tissue are less common and may be less visible. After an abscess has been drained, however, about 50% of patients will develop a complication called a fistula.

Anal Eczema

Eczematous lesions of the anal skin are typically characterized by skin thickening, reddish fissures and cracks.
Anal eczema often occurs as a sequel of other diseases, including: hemorrhoids, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, anal fistulas, chronic diarrhea, fecal incontinence, infections.

The principal symptom is persistent itching, accompanied by oozing, burning, and soreness. The intensity of the itching ranges from mild to extremely painful. It is generally worse at night and patients have difficulties in sleeping. Scratching leads to small skin wounds which also become inflamed, with the result that the person keeps on scratching for relief, thereby delaying the healing process.

A warm, humid microclimate around the anus, due to sweat, poor hygiene and fecal incontinence promotes the symptoms. Anal eczema is frequently seen in a proctologic practice.

Burn

A burn is a type of injury to flesh caused by heat, electricity, chemicals, light, radiation or friction. Most burns affect only the skin (epidermal tissue and dermis). Rarely, deeper tissues, such as muscle, bone, and blood vessels can also be injured. Burns may be treated with first aid, in an out-of-hospital setting, or may require more specialized treatment such as those available at specialized burn centers.

Testimonials

"I had suffered from multiple fissures and fistulas for almost a year. I had tried countless topical creams and ointments, all of which provided no relief!! After a morning bowel movement, I was in agony from pain and spasms all day long! I could not sit for longer periods, and could not drive. I would spend most of my days lying in bed. My family doctor sent me to a specialist and recommended that surgery was the best solution. After reading online about the several risks involved in surgery, and the long recovery process, I opted for NAITCM’s alternative treatment. After being told I’d feel relief from the pain within 15 minutes of the first treatment, I was skeptical. Then, I was amazed! Not only did they stop the pain quickly, but they greatly sped-up the healing process as well! I was so happy to use natural, plant-based herbs as a safer alternative to invasive Western surgery and prescription medications that can sometimes make things worse! I highly recommend NAITCM to those who suffer from these conditions."
